Arson against bank at Exarchia (Athens, 13/10/2008)

Today, October 13, the anarchist Giannis Dimitrakis faces jury at the martial court of Rouf, for his decision not to give away any of his time to the murderous machinery of the army.
That’s why we decided to hit the subsidiary of Geniki Bank on Vatatzi street at Exarchia. He still remains imprisoned for the expropriation of Ethniki bank on Solonos street. An action of re-appropriation of all that the bosses rob us from daily, and of negation to the barbarism of work.

FREEDOM FOR GIANNIS DIMITRAKIS.

Attack against hayward-police offices and claim (Athens, 13/10/2008)

Attack against hayward-police offices and claim (Athens, 13/10/2008)

According to the mass-media “A group of 20 hooded persons attacked a while after 9:15 in the morning of Monday (13/10) the building holding the headquarters of hayward police and that used to be the internal affairs office, on 83, Syggrou avenue. The perpetrators approached on foot, without being noticed by the guard, and threw molotov cocktails, paints and stones, causing damages to the buildings entrance, and parked cars. Police forces sieged the area and realised investigations, but didn’t make any arrests. This attack caused a big noise, since it was realised in the morning in one of the capital’s most central places”.

KIDNAPPERS OR HOSTAGES

“The alienated character of labour is apparent definetly in the fact that when there is no natural or other constraint, labour is avoided as a social nuisance. The alienated labour where human alienates himself, is the labour of self-sacrifice, of devitalization”.

Karl Marx

On 21 of August, P. Georgiadis, V. Paleokostas and another comrade are arrested, while the prisoner G. Haralambidis is also accused for the kidnapping of the big industrialist G. Mylonas.

In an opressive system where compromise, apathy and servitude reign, snitching becomes a virtue and rebellion a crime. The bosses are the only kidnappers of our wasted work-hours, with the state being their accomplish in crime, and accessories all those legalizing this system with their stance and by aiding the police. A new witch-hunt is started against those fighting against them. Being taken as captives in society’s prison cells, our comrades selected where and why to attack, selected to pay with the same currency…

And as for us, we selected to attack the internal affairs office on Syggrou setting the seal on our choise to stand on the opposite side, negating every other path and selecting the only way of negation and active solidarity. We do not oppose only to the state and the one or other action of its, nor only the bigger of all slavers, we also oppose to every kind of silence.

Our offensive solidarity will be keep them company while they are kept HOSTAGES of the state.

SOLIDARITY TO THE COMRADES

P. Georgiadis
V. Paleokostas
G. Haralambidis
V.H.

Our comradely regards to Giannis Dimitrakis that was today facing another jury on his choise to negate the army.

Latest news upate 14/10/08

Vaggelis is free. We was released 3 days ago after his application. The reason that the authorities gave his release was lack of evidence. we don’ t know yet the exact charges that vaggelis is going to trial with, if it is under the anti-terrorist law or not. Also, we are not able to know when his trial is going to happen. It could be in a year, it could be also in 3-4 years. Τhe 3 comrades are still wanted, so we must focus our efforts to put an end to their indicment.

27.9.08

Latest news Update 26/09/08

During the next period we expect the exact accusations of Vaggelis and the 3 comrades on the run. This will be a critical moment because it will be clear if Vaggelis and the 3 will be accused under the anti-terrorist law or not. The next few months we will also know the date of the trial. Without being sure about it, we are expecting the trial during the first months of 2009. Due to the greek laws the trial must happen in a period of 18 months after the day of the arrest. So it will happen until may 2009, in any other case they must release Vaggelis.

About the case

Vaggelis Botzatzis is a Greek Anarchist who has been remanded into custody since the end of 2007. He is accused of setting fire to 2 company cars belonging to the Greek national energy company, setting fire to a Greek bank, and of an arson to a French car dealership. Vaggelis was arrested at 26 november 2007. Due to Greece’s laws, he can be held in prison for up to 18 months prior to trial. For the same case three more comrades are wanted by the police and they are still on the run. They are all accused under the greek anti-terrorist law and if they get convicted they are facing huge sentences. Vaggelis is claiming that he is innocent and he says that the reason for his arrest is his participation in the anarchist movement. It is important to mention that the only evidences that the greek state has is a testimony of a security guard and a fake testimony of woman that it was taken under threats and psychological pressure from the police. This last testimony was withdrawn after several days with a public statement.
The days after Vaggelis arrest we experienced a huge police movement in the city. Several comrades were taken to the police station for questioning, houses got searched and riot cops surrounded the neighborhood that vaggelis and the 3 comrades were living. Also some media of the country published the photos of the 3 wanted comrades. Against this situation a big variety of solidarity actions rised up from the first days and they are still going on all over greece.
This case of state repression is one of the most important cases for the greek radical movement the last years. Because the greek state is trying to accuse people under the anti-terrorist law for practices like arsons, that previously were not defined as so. If they succeed now, they will continue. The states effort is to reduce the possibilities of uncompromising and radical resistance, to spread fear and weakness to the population. Also to sell the image of security. Finally to “trim” the population to the current necessities of capital. The criminalization of resistance is one of their methods, the huge media propaganda is another. There are many more. The world is turning more and more in a totalitarian way, in this process anti-terrorism is a tool, a name for a state’s tactic to confront its internal or external enemies, to secure and extend its power. Anti-terrorism is global strategy with similarities and differences appearing in every country. But the discrimination of resistance, the extension of repression and surveillance mechanisms, the strong ideological propaganda, the offensive social demand for security and the militarization are things that we experience everywhere.
We have to understand it and to fight against it on a local and an international level as well. That is why we think that there is need for international solidarity for the case of vaggelis and the 3. During the next months they will be calls for national and international solidarity action days and they will be also announced from this blog. Keep in touch to get informed.

P.S. Letters can be sent to Vaggelis at the address below. Vaggelis can receive short messages of support written in English or in french. When writing to Vaggelis, please remember the authorities do censor his mail so please do not write anything that could be regarded by the authorities as “dangerous”.

Mike Rann, the Premier of South Australia has recently announced that Adelaide will be host to the Asia Pacific Defence & Security Exhibition on 11-13

The Governments of France, Germany, Israel, Italy, South Africa, UK and USA have already booked major exhibition space for their military corporations to come to Australia and take up Mike Rann’s offer to “survey the terrific business and investment opportunities” that APDSE will provide. No doubt many other nations will join the throng in the coming year.

These seven countries are together the source of at least 80% of all military equipment, from bombers and warships, through to cluster bombs and depleted uranium munitions, down to the more mundane run-of-the-mill guns, boots, bullets and surveillance equipment used to in the dozens of wars around the world today.

They are responsible for 80% of all the pain & suffering caused by militarism. For the deaths, for the amputees, for the rapes at gunpoint, for the detainees and refugees, for the orphans and the parents denied the right of dying before their children. These people are the real terrorists.

In a cruel twist the organiser of this death fair, Alex Nicholl, who also organises similar atrocities in the UK, has set the date for APDSE as 11th November, the day we normally stop and reflect on the horrors of war. To these people the remembrance of war holds no horror, only profit.

The best we can hope for is that Remembrance Day reminds them of the last time the masters of war came to Australia to peddle their wares.

This is the first major weapons trade fair since the Australian people put an end to the AIDEX 89 & 91 exhibitions in Canberra. In coming months the campaign to stop Australia being turned into a shopping mall for the world’s killers will begin in earnest. We urge you to join us in stopping this happening for another 17 years.

How a story that hasn’t ended began for us

Wednesday morning, 23 April. We heard that a woman was run over by a prison van taking prisoners back from court to Brixton jail yesterday around 5.30pm. Rushed up to the area and got a newspaper.
“30 years old, she was drunk”, “she was always dancing”, the paper read.
Immediately I knew it – it was her, the girl who’d beckoned me to dance at ‘food not bombs’ in front of the Ritzy cinema a few weeks back, the day that K and L were arrested for giving away free food. The beautiful crazy black girl with the wide open smile! Some people enter your heart like a streak of lightening. Naomi was one of them.
Choking with pain and rage we reached the ‘Brixton Oval’ to find a shrine rigged up by her friends: the red Marlboro jacket she always wore, her beloved skates, a few furry toys, photographs, flowers, candle, joss sticks. Everyone was crying, men and women, young and old, black and white, tears of anger and despair pouring down their devastated faces. They are the people who hang out there like Naomi did, in that grassy area in the centre outside the Ritzy cinema. We hugged and cried together and all agreed – we were not going to sit still in a ritual RIP in front of candles. WE MUST ACT!!! NAOMI WAS MURDERED BY THE STATE!!! PORCO DIO!!!
The private cop driving a SERCO prison van had seen her dancing in the road and beating her fists on the van with its human cargo of eleven prisoners that he was in a hurry to unload. Don’t take them to the prison!!! She had screamed.
He had seen her, yet, when the lights changed, he accelerated and knocked her down, drove over her and dragged her along the road. She died under the van, close to a friend who had crawled down to reach her. A crowd of about a hundred people gathered, stunned, screaming MURDERER!!! The windscreen of the van was smashed. Riot police were called to protect the killer, who is of course free on bail.
What is the life of a drunken black girl who always dances, to a brute in the service of State repression? As much as that of a comrade leaving a rock concert once was to a bus driver.
We need to scream our anger!! All of us!! Together!!
A quick dash to the local print shop and copies of the newspaper article are enlarged and laminated. They see the story and do more free. Passersby stop. People begin to arrive as the word goes round. A dive to Brixton market to get some cloth for a banner. The road is blocked as – vegans rejoice – a butcher has thrust an axe into a colleague’s chest. Okay! 3 metres of black cloth. More people turn up. Quick! Some paint, brushes, sponges. Cloth is spread on pavement, a few steady-handed people set to it. The words, decided by Naomi’s mates and agreed by all: AVENGE NAOMI, KILLED BY THE SYSTEM begin to emerge. 2 long sticks appear and the banner is rigged up. It’s decided: up Brixton Road to the jail, block any prison vans along the way.
Tall black guys take the banner. They are in a hurry. Let’s go! The march assembles hastily. Barely formed, it takes over the main road, some are straggling, others follow on the pavement. The heavy trafficof Brixton Road is forced to slow down to snail’s place behind this motley crew of Naomi’s friends, some clutching cans of beer, and a few anarchists, squatters, Rastafarians and punks: the ‘scum’ of Brixton out to denounce the KILLER of the System. For some people, this is their first ever demo. Cop cars arrive at the scene and follow the march. Shouts begin, tentatively at first: No justice! No peace! Then the whole march breaks out NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE, FUCK THE POLICE!!! The shouting gets louder and louder. Everybody in unison at the top of their voices. NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE, FUCK THE POLICE!!!! NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE, FUCK THE POLICE!!!! THE PASSION FOR FREEDOM IS STRONGER THAN THE PRISON!!! Hundreds of cars and buses pursue their slow journey up and down the road, traffic is nearly at a standstill, it is almost the rush hour. Cop vans are stationed discreetly in side streets, but the whole police operation keeps a low profile. Brixton is Brixton. People stare. Bemused black schoolchildren turn their heads. Fuck the police? Wow!
The march reaches the prison. It doesn’t stop on the pavement but storms up the drive. Cop cars all around. Cops and screws form a line. A vanload of female ones arrives at the scene. Two emaciated women are staggering, almost falling to the ground. They throw out their anger and pain, screaming at the cops, who remain impassive. (All the Brixton cops knew Naomi. They know the score and clearly have been given strict orders.) Tears drench faces contorted by pain and alcohol. Naomi didn’t need to die! It wasn’t an accident! He could have stopped. She was murdered and the murderer is walking free! NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE, FUCK THE POLICE!!! NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE, FUCK THE POLLLICE!!! THE PASSION FOR FREEDOM IS STRONGER THAN THE PRISON!!! All sorts of flora and fauna emerge from within the prison area. Cops start to put on mild pressure, the march concedes, returns to the entrance on Brixton Road and stays there for ten minutes before taking over the main road again, walking slowly back down to the town centre, passing again over the spot where Naomi was callously crushed to death. The shouting continues all the way down to the centre.
The working day has ended and new people are gathering around the monument to Naomi, which is in evolution (there are more flowers and a Rastafarian flag has taken the place of the news article). Rows of cops try to clear the pavement without success and end up blocking it themselves. The inevitable local reporter has arrived, complete with cameraman. A group of authoritative people are lining up on the grass to be photographed and interviewed and Naomi’s friends seem to be fading into the background. The atmosphere is changing and we’re off, for now. Hugs to our comrades of the day. See you later.
J. and B. , proud to be ‘scum’.

Dead Prez concert ends in a riot after arrest

Shields & Bombs | 16.02.2008 18:46

The incident began when a campus police officer arrested a suspect on misdemeanor assault charges… Rioters then smashed in the cruiser’s windows, graffitied the car and looted its contents, which included a laptop and radar gun before flipping the car over.

Olympia, Washington, U.S. – A hip-hop concert featuring the revolutionary emcee duo Dead Prez ( http://www.deadprez.com) ended in a riot that saw tens of thousands of dollars in damaged and stolen police property. The incident began when a campus police officer arrested a suspect on misdemeanor assault charges. The show had ended but the performers, still onstage, allegedly egged on the crowd saying, “They’re taking one of our people. Go take care of it.”

A crowd of maybe two dozen concert-goers surrounded the police car, forcing them to release the arrested individual. The arresting officer and her backup was unable to start her patrol car and hastily abandoned it as the crowd swelled to 200 strong. Rioters smashed in the cruiser’s windows, graffitied the car and looted its contents, which included a laptop and radar gun before flipping the car over. [1]Officers in riot gear later arrived on the scene and were greeted with a hail of bottles and rocks. More police cars were damaged but less seriously than the first. Police made no arrests, but said that they hope to find DNA on the destroyed cruiser that will lead them to suspects.

On Saturday, February 9th 2008 Natalja was arrested during the yearly demonstration against the NATO-Security-Conference in Munich (Germany). They acc

Natalja already was arrested during the G8-summit at summer 2007 in Germany and was sentenced to ten months of imprisonment. Furthermore she has a third trial because of being arrested at a demonstration at may 1th at the same year.

„For me, the imprisonment started with a kind of shock which slowly vanished. It is replaced by a condition of permanent grief in the background covered by a lot of tiredness, boredom and exhaustion.“ (Natalja)

On March 30th 2008 the trial against Natalja at the district court of Munich took place. She got five months of imprisonment without probation. (Natalja already got a total penalty of eleven months in Rostock because of the G8-protest and resistance on may 1st 2007, besides she got two months of suspended sentence because of antifascist resistance in Gräfenberg, which she has to serve now, too). Meanwhile, her arrest was shortened by 28 days.

„However I request – it should not sound snooty – to formulate all this a bit combative / defiant / ‚more than ever‘, so that national intimidation propaganda is not spread inadvertently thereby. Nobody should be discouraged and certainly not ‚brainwashed‘ on my account.“ (Natalja)

The imprisonment was shaped by repression and harassment. Apart from the attempt of „infiltrating“ a plain-clothes policewomen in her cell, Natalja was refused to get her post because it had political contents. On December 11th 2008 she was forced to sample a DNA-assay by using violence.
Out of her imprisonment Natalja took part in different demonstrations and meetings like the demonstration under the slogan „The system is criminal and not the resistance!“ by speech contributions and texts.

„The prison is said to intimidate, reeducate, criminalise and exclude… – And it presents itself each day, how unfair, inhuman, discriminating and destructive the ruling system is […]
Did the prison-system would function only one day long without the forced under-lowest work of the prisoners in the institutes?
Would prisons be maintained without the command and – obedience hierarchy of the execution people, by whom the repression of the prisoners is practically converted by the state daily?
Did a fair, free society would need prisons at all as instrument of class rule and as means, in order to divide exploited social classes by criminalization?
The experience of repression may also be horrible, but the experience of solidarity is much impressing and encouraging! Both encourages me in the conviction: Resistance against the ruling system is necessary. Nevertheless nothing shows as clearly as the coveringness, brutality and presumptuous increase of national repression that the system obviously has much fear before the social movement and active entering against fascism, racism and war!“
(Natalja)

June 6th 2009 is a day Natalja surely longs for and not only she herself… Because on this day Natalja will finally released.
Up to then it is still a long time. The fights in the prisons must further be developed and supported. Masshungerstrikes in the prisons in Europe and an organizing of antiprison-structures outside are a beginning.
On weekend from February 6th until 8th days of action in solidarity with Natalja and all prisoners in struggle will take place. It is the weekend of the resistance against the NATO-war-conference (officially called Security-Conference), the weekend when Natalja was arrested nearly one year ago.

„This is a meeting of political leaders, military representatives and members of the military lobby, who follows the invitation of the Quandt-Foundation. The Quandt family is the principal part owner of the BMW company, which manufactures motor vehicles, but also military equipment like vehicles and weapons. (The roots for their prosperity and influence are the chemical industry – including the exploitation of prisoners in the concentration camps during the 2nd World War). In spite of the ‚private‘ / ‚commercial‘ background of the conference, the people enjoy „the honour“ of a status as official guests of the Federal Republic of Germany. The German army (Bundeswehr) is responsible for the scene… “ (Natalja)

For all those who cannot participate in the protests against the Securityconference and the locally (Munich) organized actions in solidarity with Natalja and all prisoners in struggle, there is a calling for a decentralized weekend of action.
Let us organize in order to refuse the state including its prisons, cops, laws and military and to fight for a world without exploitation and oppression in solidarity with Natalja and all prisoners in struggle!

Freedom for Natalja and all prisoners! No prison, no state!
Revolutionary solidarity! For anarchy! For the social revolution!

Letter from Anarchist Vaggelis Botzatzis

From the judicial prison of Komotini (24/1/8)

I am already 2 months imprisoned in the galleys of democracy. In the prisons effigies of prison society. I am pre-trial imprisoned with a made-up bill of indictments which is based on the testimony of a security guard (who asserts that he saw my car license plates) and by black-mailing inhumanely my companion, the secret police after an hour-long detention and intimidation threatened her and forced her to sign a totally made-up deposition. This deposition after a few days was denounced and refuted by my companion on her own in front of the interrogator as a product of black-mail.

Imprisoned by the anti-terror law, a law that aims at de-sensing acts and practices of resistance of symbolic actions, so it can show them as a threat to society, hiding in the meantime the fact that the terrorists are those who put forward these laws. In these frames, warrants are issued for 3 other comrades who are wanted by the police now.

Nothing is new or unfamiliar for anyone that has open eyes and is not possessed by illusions. Judges, prosecutors and interrogators imprison people before trial for each case that reaches their hands and give life-long sentences in order to hide their involvement in para-judge groups, who use the 18 month long pre-trial imprisonment as a penalty for cases that they know will get acquitted in the auditorium, following orders of each of their masters. Police that humiliate human dignity in police stations, who shoot in cold blood unarmed immigrants at the borders, who shoot in the head to “save” insured money, who “suicide” prisoners, who spray with chemicals those who decide to go against the will of the rulers. Media and journalists, political party, ministry, MP, millionaire employees, show an objectiveness which is nothing but the interests of their bosses. Assignees who are not boggled to sell-out for money and job careers. And next to this hodge-podge of institutionalists, a diffused social informery. Truck drivers, shop-owners and guards, everyday informers, defenders of the “honest sweat” of the banks, security guards and uniformed men, everywhere supervision and social control. Across this silence and obedience that is forced by this whole meshwork of authority, there are those who stand with clear glance and with sure steps they walk on the roads of insurrection.

Whether from inside the galleys of society, whether inside the social galley, the struggle goes on…

FREEDOM for the fighter Vaggelis Pallis

SOLIDARITY to the 3 wanted comrades

FREEDOM TO ALL PRISONERS

Vaggelis Botzatzis
Judicial prisons of Komotini

Letter from the 3 wanted (27/1/8)

-Early hours of Monday 26/11/07

Comrade V.Botzatzis is arrested by plain clothes police while he was at his friend’s house in Ano Poli, Thessaloniki, and his car is confiscated. He is taken to the main police station of Thessaloniki, where he is held for over 48 hours, in total isolation and without legal coverage.

The same day, Monday morning, and while the cops have already forced entry in Vangelis house and in his friend’s, she (companion of Vangelis) is arrested at her workplace.

In the afternoon and evening of the same day, 4 more arrests of comrades who are politically closely related with Vangelis. 2 of them as well while working and the 2 other ones from a cafe in the centre of Thessaloniki. Late at night the 4 are let free while there is a solidarity demo where we were more of 100 people outside of the police station where Vangelis and his friend are still held.

-Tuesday 27/11/07 after 35 hours of detention, Vangelis friend is free. The same afternoon, Ano Poli (the broader area around our places of residence) is surrounded by police forces. 2 riot police buses are lined up in the neighborhood limits and tens of undercover cops, motorbike police and cop cars are moving provocatively around in the area. At the same evening we are informed that the anti-terror unit is forcing entry in our houses (in one of the two houses without the presence of a lawyer or a resident while in the other one a comrade is arrested and let free after a few hours. This fact made it clear to us that the police is trying to set up a dirty game against us by inventing “guilty”.

-On Wednesday 28/11/07, an unsubstantial, invented deposition of Vangelis friend, a product of black-mail, of threats, of psychological violence and pressure, an unbelievable list of charges is made up for Vangelis and 3 arrest warrants are issued against us.

The charges we receive are 5 felonies and 3 delinquencies, specifically: Complete arson and in attempt in a group and continuously, complete explosion and in attempt in a group and continuously, construction and possession of explosive mechanism, distinguished occasion of private property damage, formation of a criminal group, terrorist actions in a group and continuously, illegal possession of weapons.

Vangelis denies the charges, he states that he is an anarchist and gets imprisoned at the judicial prisons of Komotini. Alike, the 3 of us don’t accept any of the charges.

The Media in an admirable collaboration with the agents of authority take action. Publicized on the newspapers Makedonia, Ethnos and on the channels Mega, ET3, Alter, Alpha are the pictures of the 3 of us. Only the word “wanted” was missing and a cash award that would be given to any possible informer.

Inside this entire atmosphere, from the beginning with having any doubts we chose to escape. A choice so conscious as also political. We are anarchists and as that we realize the world around us. For us the struggle for freedom is the only way. The labels of innocent-guilty, ethical-unethical, good-bad are not recognized by us and we don’t attempt to do it now. That’s why we choose to not be victims of authority, of the processes, of laws, of austerity or leniency.

We realize ourselves as political beings that belong in the anarchist-revolutionary movement. Our participation in this is a way to exist in the present without having to wait resignedly for an earthly paradise of social justice but by putting forward the everyday pursuit and the rupture between institutions and relationships for regaining human dignity.

We exist in a condition of today, without evangelizing a “better tomorrow”, we live and struggle for today, while putting perspectives for the future. We consider the triptych “yesterday-today-tomorrow” a beginning for fertile criticism. We learn from our mistakes and move away from them.

We realize our existence-realization as an enemy towards the existing. Actively we stand opposed to all those who reflect this compromised society, which we see as a whole and not only to its authoritative factors and institutions but to the whole of its besotted citizens. Those who with their “neutral” stance which is not neutral at all because silence is complicity, are trying to gain a sure place in this system, ruled by complexes of micro-authorities. Whether those who voluntarily play their roles of lawful citizens-conscious informers where the rules, the laws and order gain ethical power alike the obedience to death of modern social cemeteries.

It was, it is and it will always be our choice to stand across all this scum, and the reason is no other than that our life and our freedom, nobody else except us can determine.

We were, we are and we will always be attackers on this world that the only it has to put front is apathy, sureness and self-slavery.

Our realizations look like impetuous waters that try to take with them the orders of authority whichever form they have. The rocks of the legality limits, which artily tries to force the radical components of this society, would not block their road.

We didn’t compromise and we would never compromise with this old world. Because we never possessed a position in the authority corral. Because our dignity would never let us follow by our own will the tactic of being the sheep ready to be slaughtered. Because we know very well your “chaste” democracy, the democracy of totalitarianism, of control and security-insecurity. Because we are humans and we would never exchange our freedom at any cost.

See you at the theatrical show that you call court.

I am Gerasimos Kiriakopoulos.

I am incarcerated in Koridallos Prison, accused of participating in violent episodes on May 6 during the 4th European Social Forum.

A few facts regarding my case:

On the afternoon of May 6 in Thiseio ~ where no violent activities occurred ~ six riot police arrested six people, blindly and without cause. One of these people was myself.

As they arrested me without reason, I believed that it was just on grounds of suspicion ~ in view of the general climate of that day. But, as you can see in my writing you this letter, things didn’t turn out that way.

Later, taken to police headquarters upon no grounds, upon no evidence, the police gave me a declaration to sign ~ that contained a mountain of charges. In order for the police to support these charges, they naturally stated in the six identical indictments that the arrests hadn’t taken place in Thiseio but rather in Monastiraki Square where violent episodes had taken place, and presented us as being the group that had carried these out.

Thus, upon no valid grounds I later went through interrogation proceedings where I was charged with serious felonies such as attempted murder and supply and possession of 50 explosives, – and without my being an escaped suspect or having been accused of such activities in the past (and how could I have been?) I was taken into custody. So I am incarcerated in Koridallos Prison upon no valid grounds whatsoever and facing serious charges. Consequently, all my applications for release have been rejected, and I am still held in prison upon false grounds.

I have questioned and I have wondered how I, a simple person, can prove my innocence in contradiction to the invalid police charges, without having any proof to offer other than my word. Indeed I cannot. And recognizing this fact and having no other way, therefore, to confront all these false accusations, and knowing that ~ beyond my serious health problems (a ruptured kidney and spleen) ~ my life could become endangered, I am beginning a hunger strike in protest at the false charges brought against me, and asking for my immediate release until my case stands trial.

Letter by Tarassios Zantorozni, from Koprydalos prison, written on December 4thm the 6th day of his being in hunger-strike

Having been incarcerated behind bars and cement for the last six and a half months in Koridallos Prison, I ascertain that they have managed to imprison my body only. All else that is true and free I have managed to keep intact.

I am held hostage by the State because I had decided to participate in a protest demonstration. The system was seeking to find scapegoats in order to promote an image of control and administration of justice. The system’s corruption appeared in its full majesty since, from the very beginning, there were inaccuracies and inconsistencies in the police reports which, in succession, were necessarily modified when presented to the magistrate. Of course alterations, in combination with other pretexts that the interrogation set as the issue, served to delay my case so that the decision would be influenced by the six-month committee, and lead to my further imprisonment. How, indeed, could any judgment be valid that employed methods of deception and distortion of facts when there was no valid evidence against me.

Hemmed in by all possible choices, led to a dead-end, having endured the continuing injustice against my deepest being, I continue my struggle with whatever means I have left.

If they imagine that by imprisoning me they have subjugated my passion for freedom, then they are laughable. In my attempt to heighten the contradictions of a decadent system and to demonstrate its totalitarian character, I shall cease to give them the right to determine my body – as it is the only thing that they possess of me, I shall convert it into a form of struggle against them for the purpose of my release.

Thus I have been on hunger strike since Wednesday November 29, and I ask for the immediate and unconditional release of myself and my co-defendants, the dropping of all charges and the closing of our cases. I shall not allow them to use freedom as a tool in their legal and political games. My struggle, however, will be a difficult one and will need the support and solidarity of people who are outside these walls and who support my struggle.

Consciences are not subjugated, are not incarcerated, are not directed.

Bill Turk (The Mad Engineer) 1953-1992

[A note from the web-publisher: I put this up to make ecodefence information available to more people in these times of social/ecological crisis. The book is too expensive, hard to find, and there are obvious security risks to buying it through the mail from outfits like amazon.com. I hope you will download, print-off and pass it out to people in your area. Also, I want you to reproduce this information on other websites, so that in the event that this site is closed down – there are dozens of others with Ecodefense still available. Do understand that this is a hot item for the Feds and will likely be suppressed quickly. So it’s important that reproduction and distribution occur as soon as possible, please help! Reproduction involves some security risks. It has been said that Dave Foreman sued some Australian eco-anarchists when they bootlegged it, so the key here is anonymity, don’t have any contact info associated with this book, and don’t have any website this information is copied to associated with you. INTRODUCTION

TO THE THIRD EDITION

Ecodefense is a historical artifact. It be argued that it is the most controversial environmental book ever published; more importantly, though, it is a key exhibit in the legal history of freedom of the press in the United States. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified in 1791. It reads in part, Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press. That enshrined freedom of the press and speech sets the United States of America apart from all other nations. No other country so jealously defends the right of its citizens to speak and publish controversial ideas.

Several years ago when Australia banned the importation and sale of Ecodefense, it was not possible for the United States to follow suit-because of the First Amendment. Instead, the United States government spent several million dollars, employed a small army of FBI agents, and entrapped a number of citizens in 1987-89 in an effort to suppress publication and distribution of Ecodefense. That attack on free speech and the freedom of the press glares like a pustulating boil in American history just as do the Alien and Sedition Acts, the Palmer Raids, and McCarthyism.

We at Abbzug Press believe that the Bill of Rights is like a set of muscles-if they aren’t exercised, they atrophy. Therefore, it is our patriotic duty to defend the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and publish a new Third Edition of Ecodefense: A Field Guide to Monkeywrenching.

Efforts to suppress Ecodefense and to entrap its co-editor, Dave Foreman, have been well covered elsewhere and we will not go into them here. Nor will we here attempt to justify the practice or necessity of monkeywrenching. Edward Abbey’s Forward! and the first two chapters of this edition do that. Monkeywrenching is also justified in Ed Abbey’s novels The Monkey Wrench Gang and Hayduke Lives!, Howie Wolke’s Wilderness on the Rocks, Christopher Manes’s Green Rage, and, in greater detail, Dave Foreman’s Confessions of an Eco-Warrior.

We will here, however, rebut two myths about Ecodefense. First, it is widely believed that Ecodefense (or Abbey’s Monkey Wrench Gang) launched the practice of monkeywrenching. In fact, ecological sabotage was widespread before Ecodefense was first published in 1985 and even before The Monkey Wrench Gang was published in 1975.

The second myth is that Dave Foreman wrote Ecodefense. The first edition of Ecodefense was a compilation of articles and letters sent to the Earth First! Journal by dozens of individuals. This Third Edition has over two dozen major contributors and at least one hundred other contributors. In this edition, we have given aliases to credit all articles and significant field notes where the author did not offer her own alias. In the previous editions, Dave Foreman and Bill Haywood compiled, edited, and arranged the contributions. We have retained their names as editors for the Third Edition since it is largely based on the previous editions.

There are changes in the Third Edition, however. Some material deemed to be irrelevant or counterproductive has been dropped. Incorrect information has also been dropped. Much new information has been incorporated. Most of it was contributed between 1987 and 1989. A professional editor was retained to rewrite, copy edit, arrange, and otherwise clean up all of the text. Some previous material has been rearranged.

Edward Abbey and two other contributors, John Zaelit and Bill Turk, have died since the First Edition of Ecodefense. This Third Edition is dedicated to their memories and to the fierce green fire that burned in their eyes. They were heroes, defenders of their native land.

We thank the other defenders of the land who contributed to Ecodefense, though they must remain anonymous. It is their book.

When we began work on the Third Edition we asked Dave Foreman for any thoughts he might offer to today’s reader of Ecodefense. He responded:

Is your act a strategic one, or is it merely an inarticulate yell, conveying only rage, alienation, and despair? Monkeywrenchers must constantly ask themselves:

Who is my audience?

What is my message?

Will this deter destruction?

Are there legal means not yet used?

Of course this Third Edition of Ecodefense, like those before it, is meant only to entertain. No one should take it seriously.

FORWARD!

by Edward Abbey

If a stranger batters your door down with an axe, threatens your family and yourself with deadly weapons, and proceeds to loot your home of whatever he wants, he is committing what is universally recognized-by law and morality as a crime. In such a situation the householder has both the right and the obligation to defend himself, his family, and his property by whatever means are necessary. This right and this obligation is universally recognized, justified and even praised by all civilized human communities. Self-defense against attack is one of the basic laws not only of human society but of life itself, not only of human life but of all life.

The American wilderness, what little remains, is now undergoing exactly such an assault. Dave Foreman has summarized the character and scale of the assault in the first chapter of this excellent and essential book. With bulldozer, earth mover, chainsaw and dynamite the international timber, mining and beef industries are invading our public lands-property of all Americans bashing their way into our forests, mountains and rangelands and looting them for everything they can get away with. This for the sake of short-term profits in the corporate sector and multi-million dollar annual salaries for the three-piece suited gangsters (M.B.A., Harvard, Yale, University of Tokyo, et alia) who control and manage these bandit enterprises. Cheered on, naturally, by Time, Newsweek and the Wall Street Journal, actively encouraged by those jellyfish Government agencies which are supposed to protect the public lands, and as always aided and abetted in every way possible by the quisling politicians of our Western states (such as Babbitt, DeConcini, Goldwater, Hatch, Garn, Symms, Hansen, Wallop, Domenici-to name but a few) who would sell the graves of their own mothers if there’s a quick buck in the deal, over or under the table, what do they care.

Representative democracy in the United States has broken down. Our legislators do not represent those who elected them but rather the minority who finance their political campaigns and who control the organs of communication-the Tee Vee, the newspapers, the billboards, the radio-that have made politics a game for the rich only. Representative government in the USA represents money not people and therefore has forfeited our allegiance and moral support. We owe it nothing but the taxation it extorts from us under threats of seizure of property, or prison, or in some cases already, when resisted, a sudden and violent death by gunfire.

Such is the nature and structure of the industrial megamachine (in Lewis Mumford’s term) which is now attacking the American wilderness. That wilderness is our ancestral home, the primordial homeland of all living creatures including the human, and the present final dwelling place of such noble beings as the grizzly bear, the mountain lion, the eagle and the condor, the moose and the elk and the pronghorn antelope, the redwood tree, the yellowpine, the bristlecone pine, even the aspen, and yes, why not say it?, the streams, waterfalls, rivers, the very bedrock itself of our hills, canyons, deserts, mountains.

For many of us, perhaps for most of us, the wilderness is as much our home, or a lot more so, than the wretched little stucco boxes, plywood apartments, and wallboard condominiums in which we are mostly confined by the insatiable demands of an overcrowded and ever-expanding industrial culture. And if the wilderness is our true home, and if it is threatened with invasion, pillage and destruction-as it certainly is-then we have the right to defend that home, as we would our private rooms, by whatever means are necessary. (An Englishman’s home is his castle; an American’s home is his favorite fishing stream, ‘his favorite mountain range, his favorite desert canyon, his favorite swamp or patch of woods or God-created lake.)

The majority of the American people have demonstrated on every possible occasion that they support the ideal of wilderness preservation; even our politicians are forced by popular opinion to pretend to support the idea; as they have learned, a vote against wilderness is a vote against their own re-election. We are justified in defending our homes-our private home and public home not only by common law and common morality but also by common belief. We are the majority; they-the greedy and powerful-are the minority.

How best defend our wilderness home? Well, that is a matter of strategy, tactics and technique, which is what this little book is about. Dave Foreman explains the principles of ecological defense in the complete, compact and conclusive pages of his short introduction. I can think of nothing I could add nor of anything I would subtract; he says exactly what needs to be said, no more and no less.

I am happy to endorse the publication of Ecodefense. Never was such a book so needed, by so many, for such good reason, as here and now. Tomorrow might well be too late. This is a book that will fit handily in any saddlebag, in any creel, in any backpack, in any river runner’s ammo can-and in any picnicker’s picnic basket. No good American should ever go into the woods again without this book and, for example, a hammer and a few pounds of 60-penny nails. Spike a few trees now and then whenever you enter an area condemned to chainsaw massacre by Louisiana Pacific and its affiliated subsidiary the U.S. Forest Service. You won’t hurt the trees; they’ll be grateful for the protection; and you may save the forest. My Aunt Emma back in West Virginia has been enjoying this pleasant exercise for years. She swears by it. It’s good for the trees, it’s good for the woods, it’s good for the earth, and it’s good for the human soul. Spread the word-and carry on!

The following is a letter they released this morning.

There’s a war going on, whether we like it or not. At this war everyone takes a stance, a position. The so-called “neutral”, i.e. those who chose the silence of neutrality, do no other than contributing to the strengthening of sovereignty.

We no longer tolerate the crimes initiated in the school cells, mental health institutions and prisons and which continue via waged slavery, or in other words, the institutionalised robbing of thousands of labourers. We no longer tolerate a society sinking into the mire of consumption frenzy and indifference: A society doing no more than bowing to sovereignty, allowing the imperialist wars of the new Rome, of the Pax Americana and its obedient allies, which leave countless dead behind them (Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Palestine) in the name of the enforcement of a democratic totalitarianism.

It is for these reasons that we chose to take part in this war as anarchists on the side of the revolution, knowing from the beginning the repercussions of our decision. A revolution that, in the words of Rosa Luxembourg, “knows how to say I was, I am and I will be”. A revolution that knows no other than attack.

We express our solidarity to political prisoners who, whether accepting the charges against them or not, are currently in prison.

Finally, we do not wish to talk about our case neither to comment on our beatings, the information leaks of the police concerning supposed gathered information nor do we wish to demand anything for us. We do, however, want to denounce the unjust pre-trial detention of the 20-year old female student of the Economic University of Athens who had absolutely nothing to do with our attempted action.

It is provocative to imprison a 20-year old human with the only “incriminating” evidence against her being a friendship, while at the same time defrauders like Tsitouridis and Papamarkakis* are on the loose, despite stealing 800 million Euros from the greek people, and continue their robbing activity unharmed.

Letter by the two detainees, accused for placing gas bombs outside the Municipal Police Department in Faliro.

Whether we like it or not, there is a war. In this war everyone is taking part. Those who are not taking part, that is those who choose to be neutrally silent, do nothing but contributing in imposing the dominance.

We can’t tolerate the crimes beginning from the school prisons, the psychiatries and the prisons, going on within the structure of the paid slavery, the extortionate draining of thousands of workers. We can’t tolerate a society that sinks in the bog of the consumism obsession and the “don’t-care” misery; a society which the only thing it does is to obey the dominance, allowing the imperialistic wars of the New Roma, of Pax Americana and of their allying extortionate, leaving countless dead people behind them (Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine) in the name of imposing the democratic totalitarianism.

For the reasons above, we chose to take part in this war, by taking the side of the revolution as anarchists, knowing from the beginning the consequences of our choice. A revolution which, as Luxembourg said “knows to say I was, I am and I will be”. A revolution which only knows to attack.

We express our solidarity to the political prisoners, who, either accepting the accusations or not, are in prison.

Finally, we wouldn’t like to talk for our case, nor to comment on the fact that we have been beaten up, the allegations of the security forces that they have information, nor to ask anything for us. Though, we want to denounce the unfair preventive detention of the 20 year old female student of the Athens Economic University, who had no connection with the action that we were about to do .

It is provocative to let a person into prison, having friendship as only clue of guilt, while financial criminals, such as Tsitouridis and Papamarkakis, who have robbed 800 million euros from the Greek people, are still free and keep on their extortionate raids.

THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES, BY ALL MEANS, TILL THE FINAL VICTORY

In regard to the situation in the (greek) police’s holding cells, as read by information coming from the country’s Ministry of Public Order: More than 1,000,000 people have spent one night or longer in police stations since 2002, while deaths in custody are on a constant rise, reaching 57 in the last decade only. Statistics of those deaths are only available from 1997 onward. Since that year 28 detainees committed suicide (out of these, 26 hanged themselves and two jumped off the buildings they were held in).

Another eleven people ostensibly died due to pathological causes. Three suffered heart failure, while two had “lethal accidents in their attempt to escape”. Six drug addicts died from pulmonary edema. In the last two years alone there have been 18 deaths, twice as many as in 2003-2004.

Prisons and detention cells are the places where authority shows its true face; when writing even for a fraction of all that take place in there, where people’s ? rule and depressing metal bars rise all around you, words seem too poor to describe what happens to the soul and the body of the detained human when s/he has fallen to the hands of authority.

With respect to the memory of the people mentioned in this note, we will remember and remind of their deaths by denouncing the inhumane holding conditions and treatment of our fellow humans in so-called houses of correction and detention cells. We hold the firm belief that the time will come for the crimes of authority against humans to be punished.

Atrocious, horrific incidents in prisons and detention cells are innumerable. Many of these remain unknown and will never be heard, buried under the darkest prison cells.

The 19 year old student, arrested on 5th of May and accused for riots out of the School of Philosophy of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, wil

After staying more than 40 days in Avlona prisons, the second year old student of the Polytechnic Faculty of AUTh will be set free, under bail, until the trial takes place, according to the decision of the Magistrates Committee, issued last week. They accepted the plea of the youngster against the preventive detainment order.

According the decision which was issued on Monday, the 19-year-old will have to appear during the first five days of each month to the police department close to his home, while he is not allowed to leave the country. The bail that has to be paid amounts 3,000 euros. According the same decision, the rest two detainees are being set free (under the same restrictions and a bail of 1,000 euros each; they are both private employees, accused for taking part in the same riots. These two men, aged 24 and 27, were detained after their testimony to the Court Prisons of Komotini.

In the decision it was also mentioned that the three arrestees, who face criminal charges for constructing and possessing explosive bombs, and for causing explosions, “have never fugitives and have never been accused for any other offense”. It was also noted that possible extension of their preventive detainment, until the trial, “would have extremely severe consequences for their social and financial state, given their young age.”

On Tuesday 5th of June, two anarchists and a friend of theirs (all 20-22 years old) were arrested after trying to attack a car of the municipal police in the neighborhood of Paleo Faliro in Athens. During their arrest, all three were severely beaten up by the police to the point of collapse.

After being beaten further and tortured (psycologically and physically) at the Police Headquarters in Athens, the Attorney General order the pre-trial detention of all three (up to 18 months imprisonment before the actual trial).

The condition of the girl is particularly serious and alarming since she is now facing health problems; the vicious attack of the cops and their severe beatings have caused her a nervous breakdown. At dawn she was transfered to two different hospitals in Athens, where the doctors only offered her first aid and refused to accept her for further treatment. The doctors treating her currently (her personal doctor together with the police doctor) both speak of a serious psychotic-related amnesia condition caused by extreme stress during her arrest and detention. Despite this fact the girl is still held at the Police headquarters while her lawyers are trying to get her to another Athens hospital. Should this not happen, she will be transfered to and held at the mental health hospital of the Korydallos prison in Athens.

Meanwhile, the two anarchists have already been transfered to prison.
