Some reflections on a press release entitled Jackals, provocateurs and selfishness that appeared on the Notav.info site in the aftermath of the arrest of two Turin anarchists accused of being the perpetrators of the wounding of Gabriele Adinolfi.

Social decay is advancing rapidly. It does not even spare the so-called movement which, far from being an uncontaminated happy island not infrequently exudes the same suffocating miasma. In recent years, the latter’s rise in the paradise of popular consensus that occurred thanks to the struggle against the TAV [high speed railway] in Val Susa, corresponds to its descent into the mire of political calculation. In a sense this combination is not at all random. When the urge to be there leads to the negation of being, what else can you expect?

One small step after the other, one small compromise after another, and so political recognition is attained. Attained, yes, but not without paying the price.

We have been pushed to make these reflections on reading the press release entitled Jackals, provocateurs and selfishness that appeared on the Notav.info site in the aftermath of the arrest of two Turin anarchists accused of being the perpetrators of the wounding of Gabriele Adinolfi, CEO of  Ansaldo Nucleare, which took place in Genoa in May. Despite the fact that even the chief prosecutor of Turin, Gian Carlo Caselli, explicitly stated that the two accused have nothing to do with the Notav movement, a journalist known for his hatred of Val Susa protesters took the opportunity to publish an article in which he evokes imaginary connections between the very few who shoot at the legs of State managers and the many who throw stones at State construction sites.

That was enough for that website, linked to the Turin autonomia as well as ‘movement’ of the wider struggle, for them to start blowing their trumpets. How? Reminding the reporter that in this case even the papers of the prosecution, those which he professionally copies with painstaking servility, refute his lies? No, that would be too little. Notav.info has gone much further than that, to the point of sentencing: “What is certain is that struggle movements have nothing to do with individual actions born of a demential, nihilistic and egoistic culture of those who think that they always have to teach everybody and carry out actions without worrying about their effect on struggles and the need for opposition that is beginning to simmer in the country.”

After the intrigues of Tartuffe, now it is the thrust of the Maramaldo [Maramaldo, sixteenth century Italian condottiere become eponymous of “ruthless”, “villain”]. That the two arrested anarchists do not possess the minimum requirements to cash in on the solidarity of Notav.info – or to be Notav activists proponents of popular struggles – is all too obvious. And let’s suppose that any eventual demonstration of solidarity would not have been particularly appreciated by those directly involved. But that’s not the point, because the alternative to hypocritical solidarity is not and cannot be vulgar condemnation. Because there is no point in beating about the bush. Beyond their “guilt” or “innocence”, the two anarchists arrested were presented by all the national press as two “terrorists” to be condemned. And Notav.info were quick to join the chorus of blame in their own way.

And what is their way? Speaking with modesty, not on behalf of their own movement which they have appointed themselves press office of, but in the name of the ‘movements of struggle’ in their entirety, Notav.info distance themselves from the individual acts against which it throws arrows, which they had hoped had all been buried together with the ‘Soviet Encyclopedia’ of Stalinist memory. Ah, these individualist anarchists! All insane, nihilists and egoists. Readers of the ambiguous Stirner, not of that genius Mao. Capable of thinking that there is nothing to be preserved in this miserable world, thereby making themselves politically impotent. Only good for listening to the voice of their own conscience (what arrogance!), rather than serving the people, guiding them on the long march (such humility!).

So, after dissociating themselves from the sabotage that occurred in Val Susa against the high speed train, after dissociating themselves from the sabotage that occurred in Italy against the high-speed train, after dissociating themselves from the sabotage that occurred in Europe against the high-speed train, now the editors of Notav . info are associating themselves with the reactionary uproar unleashed in hunting anarchists. All in order to do away with the demon of individual revolt, or rebellion that does not ask permission from any committee, or asssembly, before doing what they think is right. Just as the anonymous saboteurs that struck the Tav building sites in Val Susa in the mid 90’s did, not knowing whether their action would lead to a mass movement, but relying only on their anger. With a heart full of dreams, not needs; of hopes, not guarantees. It is also thanks to those individual actions – “idiotic, nihilistic and egoistic” – that the atmosphere in Val Susa today is other than silent resignation.

But for the political class the only good anarchists are the dead ones, those who keep in line, those who keep silent.
