As of 10/11 our friend and comrade Nikos Romanos is on hunger strike demanding the educational furloughs that he is entitled to under their own laws. But his struggle cannot in any way be detached from the political characteristics that he himself has given or be conceived as anything less than the need that we also have to destroy the system of oppression and wretchedness that has been dominating our lives for centuries.
We cannot ignore the extended political climate that exists in our time, the vicious oppression unleashed by the state and capital against anyone who attempts to resist capitalist brutality and the unconcealed attack by the “parasites” of this economic system. At a time when the Ministry of Justice is preparing C’type prisons in order to transfer anarchist/communist fighters and disobedient prisoners, Nikos has chosen to put up a barricade for himself (and by extension for all of us) against the increasing restrictions he is experiencing.
On 24/11 he was transferred on orders of the prosecutor to “Georgios Gennimatas” hospital. His transfer there was accompanied by a document of the prison prosecutor audaciously stating that the responsibility for Nikos now lies with the hospital doctors, indirectly passing on the task of force-feeding to the hospital staff. Despite all this, whether they like it or not, the responsibility for whatever happens to Nikos’s health lies with Ministry of Justice, Nikolopoulos and the prison council.
As a minimal token of solidarity, we are also going on hunger strike just like comrade Giannis Michailidis (who started on 17/11), as of 1/12, until his demand is met.
“It is, after all, the one strength within the human being with which we achieve everything, single steadfastness and pure direction of the heart. Whoever possesses that strength should not lose himself to fear.”
