Al horria lil hrrka

A five-storey building or, to be more precise, five-storey slogans. ‘Freedom for the harraga – Al horria lil hrraka’: in solidarity with the ten immigrants arrested on 22nd September and, more generally, with those who burn borders and cages. We are right on the shores of the Dora river, at the border between Aurora and Porta Pila, and it is Saturday morning. From the roofs some ropes appear and then, letter after letter, the slogans. The carabinieri turn up almost immediately but they seem not to know what to do, so they call reinforcements. In the end the chief constable himself accompanied by police cars, Digos cars and even a van full of officers turn up. But the slogans are already exposed and the men in uniform limit themselves to asking the comrades and some passer-by for their documents.

BURN THE BORDERS EVERY DAY

FREEDOM FOR THE HARRAGA* ARRESTED ON SEPTEMBER 22!

Revolt of Rome, 15th October 2011

*Harraga is an Arab expression which means ‘the one who burns’, in this case ‘the one who burns the borders’. It is also a pejorative word for ‘clandestine’ but it is now acquiring a positive sense as it is used to indicate migrants without documents (‘illegal’) determined to overcome any obstacle between them and freedom [TN].

Ten Harraga rebels have been locked up in the Vallette prison since September 22, accused of having stirred one of the biggest revolts (with escape) in the history of the Corso Brunelleschi detention centre. Judges validated their arrest and the court of re-examination confirmed it without flinching: a punishment for them, guilty of challenging the machine of deportation with fire and sword; a warning for all those without documents [‘illigal’ immigrants] still locked up in the detention centre so that no one else follow their example.

Groups of enemies of deportation and various inhabitants of Porta Palazzo [a Turin neighbourhood] have been organizing a series of initiatives for the arrested in the last weeks, starting from the basic ones: food and gigs in order to fund the support, legal aid, public gatherings, leaflets and posters. The demo outside the detention centre to be held next Sunday will be also in solidarity with that revolt and those who were arrested  – as well as with Osmane, who was arrested last week.

Finally a series of postcards to be sent to the ten migrants locked up in the Vallette prison, to remind them that those who rebel inside detention centres are not alone. A great number of postcards have been already sent from Porta Palazzo, do the same you too.
