“Love, the strongest and deepest element in all life, the harbinger of hope, of joy, of ecstasy; love, the defier of all laws, of all conventions; love, the freest, the most powerful moulder of human destiny; how can such an all-compelling force be synonymous with that poor little State and Church-begotten weed, marriage?” – Emma Goldman 1910
Marriage is an institution of patriarchy and an instrument of the State.
We refuse to be reduced to property – to be controlled by men, passed between them and handed down surnames of ownership.
We refuse to have our dignity and autonomy transformed into heavily policed gender roles and the heteronormativity of generic married life.
This socially accepted procedure of ‘love’ remains barren and hollow, no matter how much they try to dress it up.
‘Clifton Brides’ was graffitied and had its locks glued on Wednesday night in solidarity with everyone fighting patriarchy in their day to day lives. Big love!
