On the Anarchist Response to the Global Pandemic

Anonymous submission to MTL Counter-info
The Covid19 crisis has presented a challenge to anarchists and others who believe in a fully autonomous and liberated life. We write this today because we feel too many people who in better times carry these political and philosophical banners are setting aside their core beliefs – or worse – twisting and contorting those beliefs in wholly disappointing ways, conforming to the mandates of technocrats and politicians, and are convincing themselves that doing so is some grand act of solidarity with the most vulnerable people in our societies.
We say loudly that if the political tenets you promote and encourage in the best of times whither and shrink in times of crisis, then your political tenets are worthless. Any system of organization or any belief about human autonomy that needs to be set aside when history lays a challenge at our feet, is not worth keeping around when the emergency subsides. For truly, it is times of difficulty and challenge that place our ideas on the scale of utility to tell us whether or not they are as robust as we may believe.

Thessaloniki: Message of solidarity with the squat of ROG in Slovenia

From Thessaloniki to Ljubljana-Squat everything and forever

In the 19th of January strong repressive forces invade the squatted factory of Rog in Ljubljana, Slovenia in order to proceed to its eviction. During the invasion of the cops many comrades are getting arrested and beaten up by the police.
For 15 years Rog squat has been a liberated space of meeting and self-organization against gentrification, marginalization, racism and any form of oppression. Hundreds of people who keep on fighting, migrants and members of the lgbtqi  movement among others have found the safe space and time to express themselves in Rog. And this is something that remains deeply engraved in the societal reality of the city of Ljubljana.

The mini-bus of the social centre set on fire again
Le Progrès, 2 February 2021
Remember, in the evening of November 6 Oyonnax had experienced yet another episode of urban violence. Among the material damage, the mini-bus of the West social centre was completely destroyed by fire [see photo above].
Three months later, a sad repetition of the facts. During the night of February 1 to 2, at around 2:30 a.m., the new utility vehicle received not long ago, was set on fire again. The vehicle was parked in front of the social centre.

Italy: Updates from Genova: Francesco released from prison and special surveillance for a comrade (February 6, 2021)

Last night Francesco was released thanks to a successful request for early release, which will probably lead him to face house arrest soon, but for the moment we are happy to be able to embrace him, free, outside the infamous prison walls. Updates will follow.
With regard to the request for Special Surveillance for a Genoese comrade, two weeks after the hearing of January 20, the court of Genoa decided to impose two years of red booklet [the booklet in which all restrictions are noted], all accompanied by 50 pages of reasons for the sentence.
We are well aware that our enemy will continue to attack us, trying to limit our freedom more and more, but we have long since chosen our side!
Alongside the comrades affected by repression, always complicit and in solidarity.

International Day for the Solidarity with the Hungerstriker Dimitris Koufontinas
Once again the greek state is targeting the communist revolutionary Dimitris Koufontinas (member of the revolutionary organization 17th of November-an organization that was acting against the Greek, American, Turkish and British state and the organization was focusing a lot on the struggle against imperialism). Under a recently introduced law restricting the permits of prisoners and blocking prisoners with life-sentences from serving them in agricultural prisons1), Dimitris Koufontinas was abducted without announcement from the agricultural prison where he was serving his sentence. Instead of transferring him first to the prison of Korydallos (high-security prisons in Athens), as prescribed by the same law, the greek state under the order of the secretary of the anti-crime policy (who actually does not even have the jurisdiction of such a decision), directly transferred him at the prisons of Domokos (high security prisons -type C as they are called- in which prisoners with the “antiterrorist” law will convict their penalty. Prisons that after a lot of fights were actually abolished.)
Demanding his transfer to the prisons of Korydallos, Dimitris Koufontinas is choosing once again to resist, by starting a hunger strike on the 8th of January.
While the greek state is becoming more and more authoritarian, by forcing cops in the universities, by limiting the freedom of every person living and acting in this country, is making the prisoner’s lifes even more unbearable. For us its clear. In the face of the communist revolutionary Dimitris Koufontinas the greek state is unfolding it’s revengeful strategy against an ideologically and practically consistent, unrepentant revolutionary. After 18 years of detention in the cells of their bourgeois democracy, Dimitris Koufontinas is still a member of the movement, inspiring and fighting against the oppressors and the exploiters of this world. And he is never alone. Besides him, two more anarchists prisoners were in hunger strike (Nikos Maziotis – member of the anarchist Revolutionary Struggle, and Giannis Dimitrakis, hunger strikers from 16/1 till 4/2) and two more political prisoners in custody (Vagelis Stathopoulos and Polykarpos Georgiadis) were in a 5 days symbolic hunger strike.

Patra,Greece: Taking responsibility for attack on 6th of December 2020

Patra, Greece – Taking responsibility
In the early hours of December 6, we attacked Piraeus Bank in Ellina Stratiwti street, breaking the facade and the ATMs. Amidst state bans aimed at enforcing silence and normalizing repression to an even greater degree, burying and criminalizing social and class struggles, attacking struggling social groups with hordes of cops in the streets and upgraded repression, we carried out a minimal memorial action for the continuation of the insurrectional and aggressive meaning of the December 2008 revolt.
The protests, the sabotages, the attacks on state and capitalist objectives are timeless tools in the quiver of the struggle for social revolution and we will preserve them at all costs against the capitalist attack on our lives. In the picture that we saw the next day, the murderers guarding the monument of anarchist student Alexandros Grigoropoulos but also in all that had happened throughout Greece, we answer with our daily action, preparing for the necessary organization and sharpening of our tools and struggles. And a promise, that December is not over, it lives in the hearts and minds of all fighting for a world of equality, solidarity, freedom, a world to be born on the ruins of the state and capital.

A paper “without-a-reason”
Producing and distributing a fortnightly paper newspaper in this day and age of digitised propaganda might seem like a no-motive choice. For us, however, it meets a clear need. Not only are there fewer and fewer periodical anarchist publications (at least in Italy), but we believe it is useful and even and above all necessary to re-appropriate a medium which, unlike telematic propaganda, carries with it a different temporality and materiality. By their very nature, internet times are too fast for reflection, and the overexposure to news makes them all seem the same. Instead, a concrete object presupposes more diluted times and a choice of content, and therefore of quality. This same materiality lends itself less to definitive elimination, which often happens to websites when they are taken down. We also believe it can have the quality of the good old printed paper, and that it succeeds in some way in contributing to the spread of anarchist ideas and practices in a more incisive way.

An interview with anarchist political-prisoner Eric King with the Seattle-Tacoma chapter of Black and Pink.(USA)

In this time when authorities refuse to keep people safe from COVID-19, when rebellion is a fresh on our minds, and when the abolition of police and prisons is becoming a clear necessity to more and more people, we’ve got something to learn from an anarchist political prisoner like Eric King. Eric vandalized the office of a government official in Kansas City, MO, in solidarity with the Ferguson uprising, was arrested in September 2014, and then was sentenced to ten years for the window he broke in June 2016. Such a sentence is horrible, but not shocking. Prisons, after all, do more to keep hierarchies safe than people.
Eric is now facing a bogus charge of assaulting an officer that could land him another 20 years inside. At the time of writing this, he has been hit with a mail restriction and can’t receive letters of support. But we can make ourselves aware of his case and learn from his words.
The following is an interview with Eric conducted through snail mail by the Seattle-Tacoma chapter of Black and Pink, a queer/trans abolitionist group that focuses on building community across prison walls.

Puppets and puppeteers (Spoleto, Italy, February 8th, 2021)

The Italian government has approached this year of state of emergency according to the old paternalistic policy of carrot and stick. Harsh repression of those who rebel, as in the case of the massacre following the riots in Italian prisons, but also timid alms which keep the country in a “State of resuscitation”.
Beyond the puppet main actors in the political theatre, we believe that the current government crisis can be read within this framework: some forces, such as the Confindustria, have begun to beat up the executive in order to obtain a government that is even more advantageous for their interests. They see the movement of the exploited in disarray, the revolutionary movement almost completely voiceless, and they want to go on the attack.
Based on the assumption that as anarchists we are against all politics, we want to talk about this in order to understand what to expect and how to deal with this situation.
WE’LL TALK ABOUT IT ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8th, AT 5 PM, AT CIRCOLACCIO ANARCHICO, VIALE DELLA REPUBBLICA 1/A, SPOLETO.

At the end of last December the Greek government approved a reform of the national penitentiary system that, in addition to other measures that worsen prison conditions, establishes that those convicted of terrorism cannot access “rural prisons”, more “open” institutions to which long-term prisoners have access. The approval of this law has led to the immediate transfer of political prisoner Dimitri Koufontinas from the rural prison of Kassevitia.
Dimitri is a comrade convicted for participating in the revolutionary organization 17 November, in prison since 2002. The new set of laws stipulates that inmates in rural prisons are reclassified and then transferred to the last prison they were in. In Dimitri’s case it should have been the Athenian prison of Koridallos. However, the prison administration decided to transfer him, manipulating the transfer papers, to Domokos prison. Although there are no differentiated circuits in Greece, in recent years, the prison administration has turned Domokos into a “hard” prison.

What can make a person lock up another up by force, deprive them of their freedom, personal initiative, identity, responsibility and loves? The lure of gain, no matter how derisory? Blind infinite obedience to an omnipotent authority that orders them “do this for me”? Sadistic delusion masquerading as benevolence, telling oneself “I’ll do it better than anyone else”?
